Georg Friedrich (Fritz) Melchers is Professor of Immunology at the University of Basel, Switzerland, and a leading expert in the field of immunology, in particular B cell immunology. Since 2003, he has been Senior Research Group Leader at the Max Planck- Institute for Infection Biology in Berlin, Germany. Prof. Melchers is also co-founder of 4-Antibody, a company set up in 2002 that intends to produce and improve human antibodies.
From 1980-2001 he was director of the Basel Institute for Immunology. In this position Prof. Melchers selected, supported, guided, critically reviewed and integrated over 300 scientists with their research projects in most major fields of immunology.
From 1970-1980 Prof. Melchers was Permanent Member at the Basel Institute for Immunology. Prior to that, he held positions as visiting scientist at Stanford University Medical School, USA, and Weizmann Institute, Israel, as senior research assistant and postdoctoral fellow at Max-Planck Institute for Molecular Genetics, and research associate at Salk Institute for Biological Studies, USA.
Prof. Melchers is author of more than 300 scientific publications and book chapters. He is co-editor of several immunological journals and serves as expert for many foundations and boards. He has served in a variety of scientific steering committees, advisory boards of academic institutions, and boards of biotech companies. He has received various awards for his work.
Prof. Melchers has a PhD in chemistry from the University of Cologne, Germany. And a Dr.rer.nat. habil., Venia legendi, from the University of Freiburg i.Br., Faculty of Biology.
