Celebrating the next generation of TB vaccine scientists

In 2024, TBVI introduced the TBVI Award to encourage promising early-career scientists and recognise outstanding contributions to tuberculosis (TB) vaccine research and development. Through this initiative, TBVI aims to support and inspire the next generation of researchers working towards the discovery, development, and implementation of new safe, effective, and affordable TB vaccines.

Each year, awardees are invited to present their work at the annual TBVI Symposium in Les Diablerets, Switzerland, – a unique international forum that brings together researchers, developers, policymakers, and funders dedicated to advancing TB vaccine innovation and development. Beyond recognising their scientific excellence, the awardees are therefore getting visibility, and a unique opportunity to engage within the global TB community.

Meaningful awards

The TBVI Awards themselves are artistic creations symbolising the human stories that form the basis of the fight against TB.

In 2024, awardees received unique paintings created by artist Paulina Siniatkina, a TB survivor whose work is dedicated to raising awareness and fighting stigma surrounding TB. Through her art and personal story, she brought an inspiring and deeply human perspective to the event.

In 2025, the Institut Pasteur of Madagascar contributed to the award ceremony by sharing the story of a mother and infant participating in a TB vaccine clinical trial, while local artists created a special drawing to honour the awardees and the broader TB community.

In 2026, awardees  received handcrafted beadwork developed in collaboration with the South African Enhancing Care Foundation, reflecting community engagement, creativity, and resilience in the global effort against TB. 

These keepsakes serve as lasting reminders that scientific progress is strengthened through human connection, creativity, and shared commitment, and that advances are most meaningful when they are connected to the communities they aim to benefit.
